Admission Control offering college-prep courses

Austin Business Journal - March 30, 2006

Local nonprofit Admission Control is partnering with Central Texas universities to provide after-school college preparation for low-income high school students.

The program, College Forward, will let university students lead tutoring in exchange for AmeriCorps or work-study credit. High school students in the program will receive more than 400 hours of tutoring during their last two years of high school, including preparation for standardized tests and college visits.

St. Edward's University and Southwestern University in Georgetown will join the program, according to the nonprofit.

The initiative is partially funded by a grant of almost $100,000 from the TG Public Benefit Grant program, an arm of the Round Rock-based Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corp.

"We are combining our proven curriculum with a new, cost-effective business model that is truly collaborative," says Lisa Fielder, Admission Control executive director.

Admission Control is an education-focused nonprofit that provides college prep and college retention services for low-income students.
